Women's Chorus To Begin Fall 2008
In keeping with that mission to be inclusive there is no audition
required to sing in either the women's or men's chorus. This
is a model that puts a lot of responsibility on the
process of rehearsal to provide people with the tools
necessary to learn to sing and succeed in a choral
ensemble. Moreover,
the process of rehearsal needs to be such that those
with lots of experience singing can come sing and not
feel "held
back." The
desire with this model is to break down barriers like "auditions" and
make the choral arts available to anyone with a desire
to learn and more importantly, to persist!
The Men's Chorus has been a tremendous success and has followed
this model. Singers consist of seasoned singers and beginners. If
you would like to hear them you can check them out
online.
The Women's Chorus will have it's own program on joint concerts
with the Men's Chorus. They may also from time to time be invited
to sing alone. In addition, on the joint concerts, the Women's
and Men's Chorus will join forces to sing together. The Choral
model is one in which a person joins an ensemble to
do something they could not do by them self, and this model will be
extended to both ensembles through singing together for a few pieces
on each concert.
The Women's Chorus will most likely meet on Monday evenings from
7-9 p.m. at the Southside Baptist Church Choir Room. Currently
there are 26 women interested in getting this chorus off the ground
- this is exciting because the critical mass number has been 30. With
30 singers we can start doing some great literature right off the
bat. As far as literature is concerned, I prefer a buffet of
music from various genres. This sort of program has proven successful
in building audiences across the country.
I hope you are interested and know others who might be interested. We've
got a good thing going with the Men's Chorus and it's growing - almost
like kudzu. It's time to move forward with a women's chorus. We
want to create premier choruses that are big jewels in the crown of
the city's arts culture and we want these choruses to be something
the city and surrounding region can be proud of.
